Loveland, OH and Oxford, UK, August 6th 2003 - Amphora Research Systems announced today that it has implemented a discovery research solution at Oxford BioMedica. Amphora Research Systems are a recognized leader in Electronic Laboratory Notebook solutions to better support the research activities of scientists. Oxford BioMedica personnel can now secure their original scientific records on loose-leaf security paper, acceptable to legal counsel, and additionally have access to a searchable, shareable repository of vital scientific activities.
Discovery research is a key activity for any Biotech organization. Creating and retaining accurate, signed and witnessed records is critical to protecting a company's investment in its Intellectual Property portfolio. The ability to successfully defend its Patents is essential to a Biotech's growth and stability, and assures potential revenues that arise from products developed.
Computers are an increasing part of R&D work, yet patent considerations mean most scientists have to document their research in a traditional bound paper lab notebook (BLN). This means a large amount of "Cut & Paste" involving real scissors and tape - and a lot of wasted time. This gap between their work (performed on computer) and the record keeping mechanism (BLN) is an increasing source of frustration and lost productivity for scientists all over the world. To make matters worse, BLNs obstruct the computer-facilitated searching and sharing which is key to working effectively as a team in today's modern organization.
Oxford Biomedica is using Amphora's PatentSafe™ solution to create records on PatentPad® security paper, which is then signed and witnessed as previously with their bound lab notebook. Oxford BioMedica's scientists use whatever PC based client tool they prefer (e.g. Word, Excel, LIMS client) to "assemble" the record, and then submit this to Amphora's PatentSafe™ application.
"Amphora's PatentSafe™ has enabled us to migrate from cumbersome, outdated bound laboratory notebooks to a computer-based record system, which still provides hard copy and signed and witnessed records to satisfy our intellectual property requirements." said Dr. Sue Kingsman, Executive Director & Senior Vice President, of Research. "In addition, PatentSafe™ provides us with a searchable, shareable file system for all our records."
Simon Coles, President & COO, Amphora Research Systems, said: "We have been proud to work with Oxford BioMedica to deliver a cost-effective replacement for their bound lab notebooks. We were aware that Research Scientists are becoming increasingly frustrated with the need to keep bound lab notebooks, when a significant amount of work is performed on computers. Oxford BioMedica has demonstrated how a leading biotech organization can increase their scientists' productivity and capability to collaborate, while producing better records for the defence of their Intellectual Property."
